some photos of Rae Desmond Jones
from the mid-1970s
Poets in Their Youth: Ken Bolton recently — in 2017, sadly after Rae Desmond Jones’ death by melanoma — sent me an email with nine TIFF photos enclosed, taken by Ken Bolton in the mid 1970s, in the alley at the rear of 9 Arcadia Road, Glebe, in Sydney, where Ken, Rae and many other poets then lived. They were taken but not used for the launch of the book of Rae’s titled Shakti, by Makar Press in Brisbane. Martin Duwell, who ran Makar Press from the English Department of the University of Brisbane where he worked as a teacher, was a keen photographer with good equipment; the photo used for the book was probably his own. He certainly took the dour photo of me for my book of sonnets, Crying in Early Infancy: 100 Sonnets (1977), published in the same series as Shakti. Here they are, cropped and converted to JPG files.
