[ Right: NZ stamp, 45 cents, based on a black and white photo of the Scott Base 1957 Opening Ceremony, five men saluting, two men not, all in thick clothing ] [ down the right side, a strip of gold and white endpaper ] as a poetic / form is / vastly open to / possibility. / … The terminal raises various / issues about poetic form, / conservation, usurpation, / influence and composition / that no other form can raise. / Because Tranter overwrites — / and in the process simultan- / eously effaces and preserves — his source poem while re- / taining [ the anchoring ] points of the source / poem, his terminals are both / conservative and destructive. /

These are scans of pages of a Tapa Notebook, filled out by Australian poet John Tranter for the University of Auckland Library. It recounts his experiences in Auckland in March 2012 at the University’s symposium ‘Short Takes on Long Poems’. John has published an internet journal with similar material. This Notebook has the advantage of handwriting, doodles, decoupage and lots of colourful New Zealand stamps.
