page 003

Text: [ right, a bland picture view of modern buildings in Auckland, taken from the hotel, titled 000a-view-from-hotel.jpg ]
Hotel — the name / is bound to remind / Australian writers of / Quadrant magazine, / founded by poet / James McAuley in 1956 as a / bulwark against the menace of / international Communism, and / funded for many years by the / US CIA./ [ photo on right of John Tranter, besuited, reading a poem, titled jt-reading-by-pam-brown ] [ Pale blue pilcrow ] That evening I / donned my disguise / as an executive of the / Hartford Fire and / General Insurance Company; / to wit, a fine wool summer- / weight suit, and a subdued / tartan tie — the tartan in honour

Commentary:
(1) Needless to say, Quadrant magazine (literary editor for decades, Les A. Murray) leans to the right-wing views of its founder. (2) The Insurance firm mentioned kept poet and insurance executive Wallace Stevens alive for most of his life. (3) Tartan: New Zealand is inhabited by many Scots driven out of their homelands by perfidious Albion.

These are scans of pages of a Tapa Notebook, filled out by Australian poet John Tranter for the University of Auckland Library. It recounts his experiences in Auckland in March 2012 at the University’s symposium ‘Short Takes on Long Poems’. John has published an internet journal with similar material. This Notebook has the advantage of handwriting, doodles, decoupage and lots of colourful New Zealand stamps.
