Commentary:
What is odd and pleasant about New Zealand is that no one seems to care much about race. Perhaps the violent opposition of the Maori to white British rule, hundreds of years ago, forced the British invaders to respect them. In any case, many New Zealand place names are Maori, pointing out clearly who once ruled the country, and there is a general respect for Maori language and culture.
