Text:
[ two photos and a New Zealand stamp: one photo center left, John Newton looks at Selena Tusitala Marsh holding a roll of yellow tape with the word CAUTION emblazoned on it, photo labelled ‘john-newton-selina-marsh.jpg’ 45 cent NZ stamp below with a picture of a large fast yacht and the legend 1992 AMERICA’S CUP CHALLENGE, photo below right, two women stand on an empty beach looking out at a deserted sea with the title ‘d-lots-of-water.jpg’ ] [ pale blue ink: ]
Oneroa Beach was a / short, crowded bus trip from / the ferry terminal — / a kilometre long / half-moon beach / facing East. / A chill wind / blew off the Bay / which I was / soon grateful / for. /

Commentary:
It’s all very maritime, isn’t it? Water, water, everywhere… and of course in New Zealand one is never far from the ocean, which the Maori was expert at navigating, and which all the early white inhabitants of New Zealand has to cross at their considerable peril. Caution indeed.

These are scans of pages of a Tapa Notebook, filled out by Australian poet John Tranter for the University of Auckland Library. It recounts his experiences in Auckland in March 2012 at the University’s symposium ‘Short Takes on Long Poems’. John has published an internet journal with similar material. This Notebook has the advantage of handwriting, doodles, decoupage and lots of colourful New Zealand stamps.
