Paragraph 1 follows:

From Lyn Tranter: In 1985 I managed a tour of four Australian writers to the United States and Canada, a tour encompassing 6 weeks and some 16 venues. The four writers were Geoff Page, Pi O, Joanne Burns and John A. Scott, and between them they showed the wide scope and range we have in Australia. The readings met with great appreciation. You can read the pamphlet of poems, photos, biographies and ads here.

2:

This year I am bringing from Australia three writers, or rather two writers and one editor.

3:

Helen Garner is a short story writer who has achieved great success over the last ten years, and whose work is beginning to be highly regarded in the United States. Laurie Duggan is a poet who captures the landscape of Australia. He is both chronicler and geographer. Duggan’s poetry tells of a landscape vastly different to North America’s. He also brings his own particular Australian sardonic humour to contemporary urban society. Michael Heyward is an editor of the literary magazine Scripsi. This magazine, which is co-edited by Peter Craven, has become in the words of John Ashbery ‘one of the liveliest English language journals being published anywhere today’. Michael Heyward and Peter Craven are bringing writers from around the world together in this energetic and challenging journal.

4:

This tour has been funded by the Australia Council’s Literary Arts Board and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs. Both these bodies realise the importance of bringing our writers overseas. The writers learn from the responses of a different audience, and benefit from the contact with other writers. And the host nation gets to meet & hear the diversity of talent that Australia is developing today.

5:

If your interest in Australian writing has been stirred by your contact with it here, please follow through — the bookshops, publishers and other addresses offered in this booklet are there to be used. A whole continent of new and different writing is waiting for you, just over the horizon.
